LUBA - Drc Congo / Zaire / Zambia

The 'Luba' tribe in Zambia / DRC Congo number 1 million people. The Luba are famous for their stools, divination bowls (mboko), face masks, carved bow stands and memory boards. The Luba people honor a supreme being and natural-spirits.

A significant feature of Luba culture was kibuta – divination. The Bilumbu were spirit mediums who would enter into a trance, gazing into mboko, within which ritual objects were put. The diviner would use the objects in the mboko as an predictor, reading the will of the spirits through the position of the objects in the bowl.

The history of the Luba tribe and its people is told by using a memory board. The memory board is made of beads and uses different colour beads for the different Tribes or people. Not everyone is told how to read or interpret the memory board though.
