An rare old Passport African Mask from the Toma Tribe from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. This rare mask is known as a 'Landai' initiation mask which symbolises a well known ancestor and which spoke a secret language. The 'Poro' society which the Toma base themselves around were responsibe for the initiation of young boys. These masks were worn when it was time for the young boys to be initiated into adulthood, during the ceremony the mask would devour up the young boys then they would re-emerge as men. This is a superb example of a Rare and old Toma mask showing good signs of age and use.
