A beautiful Luba 'Kifwebe' Tribal mask sourced from The DRC Congo. This rare rounded 'Kifwebe' mask is associated with the moon to which special rites were devoted. The white color scheme recalls the realm of the ancestorsand the black color scheme recalled negative aspects. These masks appeared as a male and female pair at the deat or investiture of a chief or dignitaries. The term ' Kifwebe' ("Driving away death") suggests a connection with the Luba 'Kanzanzi' secret society which was responsible for warding off sourcery and harmful influences.
