A superb male Makonde tribe face mask sourced from the Makonde tribe, Tanzania. These anthromorphic face masks portray particular individuals or occasionally represent sickness. The Makone still hold masquerade dances at the end of initiation ceremonies when adolescent boys & girls return from their seperate bush camps after a period of seclusion. In this context this mask embodies ancestral spirits whose apparition serves to remind the initiates of their new position in the community and the rights and duties it entails.
This is a great example of a rare Makonde face Mask mask showing good signs of wear and use. See similar example in 'African Masks' The Barbier-Mueller Collection pg 99.
