A genuine and old Kumu (Komo) African mask from the DRC Congo. These masks are considered embodiments of the diviners spirit and may be viewed only by initiates. Occasions for the appearance of masks, which are kept by the eldest men in the 'Nkunda' society, include the initiation of adepts or memorial services for deceased members. At these nocturnal ceremonies a male-female pair of dancers clad in costumes sit on a bench and perform a dance consisting only of arm and head movements. Ref: 'African Masks' The Barbier-Mueller Collection, cf example pg94.
This is a fine example of a very rare Kumu (Komo) mask and shows good signs of age and use. STAND NOT INCLUDED.
