A superb 'Bete' Tribal mask sourced from The Ivory Coast, West Africa. The Bete tribe are known for one type of mask, The Gre or Nyabwa. These masks have exaggerated and distorted features such as a large protruding mouth, a bulging forehead, nostrils extending to the sides of the face and a high domed forehead with a medium ridge. This type of mask was worn to prepare men for war, the masks offered magical protection by instilling fear and terror in potential enemies. This is a superb example of such a rare mask from the 'bete' Tribe and is in great condition.
