An exquisite African Mask from the Igbo Tribe, Nigeria. This is one of the most familiar types of masks produced by the Igbo. This African mask represents the "spirit of a young girl" (agbogho mmuo). These African masks are worn by young men during harvest celebrations and the ceremonies held annually in honour of the earth spirit. The "young girls" are accompanied by a "mother" whose mask is adourned with a great crest or hood. The dancers wear colourful, closefitting costumes with false breasts. This is an exquisite mask and is in great condition, the mask is dressed with shells around the forehead, a raffia beard and beaded earrings. The black markings are superbly embedded with red beading.
