A lovely old Songye 'Kifwebe' Mask from the DRC Congo. Kifwebe means 'mask' in the Songye language, this Songye mask is a feminine mask due to its plain coiffure. During initiation, circumcision or funeral ceremonies a dancer will wear the mask and his body will be covered with straw.. The dancer wearing this female mask will display more gentle and controlled movements and is to be associated with reproduction ceremonies. This is a great example of a Songye 'Kifwebe' Mask mask showing much signs of wear and use.
