An incredible Yombe Maternity figure from DRC Congo. This statue was given to an expecting mother to provide her and her unborn baby with spiritual protection. With this cult, a pregnant woman is isolated by the cult for a specific period of time whilst the cult commissions a figure from a sculptor. This statue shows a kneeling figure nurturing her young child. What is also interesting with this piece is it still contains "medicines" in an orifice on the figures belly and back which are closed by a piece of glass, a monkey over its right shoulder and a snake perching over the figures head. The statue has some great Tribal markings covering large parts of its body. This is a superb example of such a rare Yombe Maternity Figure showing good signs of age and use.
