A Superb statue from the Yombe tribe, DRC Congo.
This statue is 'Nkondi,' which indicates that the figure was prepared to defend its owner. It was carved with that end in mind by a healer' a 'Nganga.'
This statues face allowed the healer to see a spirit from the world of the dead. Through the figures mediation, the healer moved the spirit to water over the person who commissioned the sculpture. The statue was charged with its magic power thanks to the 'medicines' that were placed around the head like a crown and in an orifice on the figures belly which was closed by a piece of mirrored glass. The healer gave the figurine its power by blowing on the magic substances, then closing the orifice and carrying out different ritual gestures. The figure was then put in the care of its owner in order to work against the malicious forces. The piece protected the innocent.
It was ready to ward off sourcerers who could serve as a witness to agreements made before it. On each occassion a metal blade was stuck or nailed to the statue to awaken the spirit. The pieces of metal were licked to increase their power. Pursued by the spellbinding gaze of eyes, the offended ran the risk of suddenly dying or falling prey to an illness inflicted by the spirit.
